The Mattress Factory art museum has settled claims of sexual harassment with current and former employees. The Mattress Factory acknowledged that its response to reports of sexual harassment by the employees was “inadequate.” The employees alleged that after complaining to management about sexual harassment, they were faced with intimidation and threats of losing their jobs. As part of the settlement, the Mattress Factory will be implementing policy changes and new training requirements.
This settlement comes after a long investigation by the National Labor Relations Board into the allegations made by the employees. The resulting settlement has encouraged other nonprofit leaders to look at their own policies regarding sexual harassment and retaliation, which could be another positive outcome of the Mattress Factory employees speaking up.
In the era of the #MeToo movement, more employees feel that they can and should speak up. When they do, it creates the possibility that other businesses will take note and will make proactive attempts to curb and prevent sexual harassment and retaliation in the workplace.
